Phishing

by Forum Member » Thu Oct 21, 2010 5:27 pm

Another type of scam that pet sitters commonly fall for is phishing attempts.

Again, NEVER EVER EVER click on ANY links in emails! Ever! That includes from friends, website hosts, your bank, your software (especially 'updates') the irs, or anyone!!!

If you get a message from one of these entities, simply ignore the link and open a browser window. Then type in the URL you KNOW by hand (for example, godaddy is godaddy.com). Don't copy it from the email! If they really sent you a message, it will be listed in your account.

For example: if you are a business owner with a website, you will likely get one of these:
---------------

Dear myfirstname mylastname,

It's that time of year again. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) annually requires that all accredited registrars ask their domain administrators/registrants to review domain name contact data and make any changes necessary to ensure accuracy. According to our records, you are the ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT on the following domain names registered at www.myeasylink.com as of September 1st, 2010:

mydomainname.COM

To review/update your contact data:
1. You will need a copy of your Domain Information Key:
8B04DE8C-7783-4DF6-9123-54B3B611A3CC
2. Go to https://www.securepaynet.net/icann/doma ... sc=BCCN10C
NOTE: If the link does not work, copy and paste the URL into your browser.
3. Input your Domain Information Key and review your contact information.

If you find that your domain contact data is current and accurate, there's no need to take action. If, however, your domain contact information is inaccurate, you must correct it. (Under ICANN rules and the terms of your registration agreement, PROVIDING FALSE CONTACT INFORMATION CAN BE GROUNDS FOR DOMAIN NAME CANCELLATION.) To review the ICANN policy, visit: http://www.icann.org/en/whois/wdrp-registrant-faq.htm

Should you have any questions or believe you have received this email in error, please email us at support@secureserver.net or call our customer support line at 480-624-2500. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
www.yourrealdomainhostsname.com

Some of these are legit notifications, but some are phishing.
